Overview of 430 Stainless Steel Sheet
AISI 430 is a low-cost, ferritic stainless steel containing 16-18% chromium, providing good corrosion resistance in mildly corrosive environments and excellent formability. Unlike austenitic grades, 430 contains virtually no nickel, making it an economical and magnetic solution for a range of applications. Its bright, smooth surface finish and resistance to oxidation make it a popular choice for appliance panels, kitchen equipment, architectural trim, and automotive decorative components. With a maximum operating temperature of approximately 815°C for scaling resistance, 430 stainless steel sheet is easily fabricated by bending, drawing, and moderate stretching, and is widely used in thicknesses from 0.3mm up to 6mm in cold-rolled annealed and pickled condition.
Key Features and Surface Finishes
430 stainless steel sheet is manufactured through electric arc furnace melting, AOD refining, and continuous casting, followed by hot rolling to thickness and then cold rolling for gauge accuracy and surface quality. The material is supplied in the fully annealed condition (usually 760-815°C) and pickled or bright annealed. Its ferritic structure provides a uniform, stress-free matrix that resists chloride stress corrosion cracking. Unlike austenitic grades, 430 is magnetic and cannot be hardened by heat treatment, only by cold working. The standard surface finishes available are 2B (smooth, uniform matt), BA (bright annealed, highly reflective), No.4 (brushed satin), and hairline. The plate/coil is subject to strict chemical analysis, tensile testing, hardness verification, and dimensional tolerances conforming to ASTM A240. Common thicknesses range from 0.3mm to 6.0mm for cold-rolled sheet; thicker hot-rolled plate up to 50mm can be supplied on request.
Main Applications of 430 Stainless Steel Sheet
430 stainless steel sheet is extensively used in the home appliance sector for washing machine drums, dishwasher tubs, microwave oven cavities, and refrigerator panels where its magnetic nature is used for door seals and its corrosion resistance is sufficient for interiors. In kitchenware, it finds use in sink bowls, cooking utensils, and cutlery components (often as a base metal for 18/0 cutlery). The automotive industry uses 430 for exhaust system tubing (cold end), catalytic converter heat shields, and decorative trim. Architecturally, it is chosen for interior cladding, elevator doors, and escalator panels due to its excellent surface finish and low cost. Other applications include laboratory benchtops, nitric acid storage tanks, and petrochemical equipment handling oxidizing acids where nickel-free materials are required.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is 430 stainless steel magnetic?
Yes. 430 is a ferritic stainless steel and is strongly magnetic. This is a key difference from austenitic grades like 304 or 316, which are non-magnetic (or only slightly magnetic when cold worked). Its magnetic nature makes it ideal for applications like induction cooker surfaces, refrigerator doors, and where magnetic attachment is required.
Can 430 stainless steel rust?
430 provides good resistance to atmospheric corrosion and many mild chemical environments, but it can show surface rust (staining) in aggressive conditions, particularly in the presence of chlorides (salt water, de-icing salts) or reducing acids. It is not recommended for marine or coastal applications unless protected. For those environments, 304 or 316 is preferred.
Can 430 be welded?
430 can be welded using standard arc welding processes (TIG, MIG) with ER430 or austenitic filler (like ER309). Preheating to 150-200°C is recommended to prevent cracking, and post-weld annealing at 760-815°C is often required to restore ductility and corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone. Due to grain growth in the weld zone, welds in 430 may be more brittle than the base metal.
What is the difference between 430 and 304 stainless steel?
The primary differences are composition, cost, and magnetic properties. 430 contains 16-18% chromium and virtually no nickel, making it cheaper and magnetic. 304 contains 18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel, is non-magnetic, more corrosion resistant (especially to chlorides), and tougher. 430 is often chosen for indoor appliances and architectural trim, while 304 is used for food processing equipment, chemical plants, and outdoor structures.
What surface finishes are available for 430 sheet?
We stock 430 sheet in 2B (standard cold-rolled, annealed, pickled, and skin-passed – smooth matt), BA (bright annealed – mirror-like, highly reflective), and No.4 (brushed satin – linear grain, used for architectural panels and appliances). Hairline and mirror-polished finishes are available on request for specific design requirements.
